Instructional content standards determine what teachers have to teach and what students have to learn for a specific grade level. This year, we will be using the newly adopted Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics. These standards are the basis for the new Smarter Balanced assessments. We are also transitioning in using the new California ELD Standards [which are aligned to the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS)] and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). As for the other curricular areas (e.g. social studies, arts), we will be using the existing California Content Standards.
